For occasional use, it’s just fine and still bigger than the third row in the Toyota Highlander. The third row is tight and there’s not much room behind it for cargo, but when it’s folded the Sorento’s cargo hold cavernous. While some of the plastic materials are clearly built to a price, the look and the color choices, especially on higher trims, is almost premium. The Sorento’s cabin is as stylish and tasteful as the exterior. ![]() AWD Sorentos offer plenty of traction, but the X-Lines get an extra 1.3 inches of ground clearance and a variety of other tweaks which greatly improve off-road ability. If there’s a weakness, it’s that the PHEV makes only 90 horsepower in electric mode, which makes for a slow ride around town. Is it sporty? No, and the base engine is underwhelming, but the optional 2.5-liter turbo and 1.6-liter hybrids aren’t slow and deliver decent performance. On the road, the Sorento is a pleasant companion with capable handling and a smooth ride. The 2023 Kia Sorento’s sleek lines, distinctive if a bit Acura-like, make it look smaller and lower than it actually is, so you’ll be doubly surprised at its interior space efficiency when you step aboard. The hybrid Sorento’s performance and fuel economy also make it a credible rival to the two-row Toyota Venza. It also meaningfully differentiates the Sorento from some other small midsize two-rows like the Honda Passport, Ford Edge and its Hyundai cousin, the Santa Fe. Like the smaller machines, the Sorento’s wayback is only for kids, but it is useful for short jaunts. The additions go some way towards keeping the Sorento’s price from drifting too near larger SUVs, though the PHEV is still pricey.Īt 189 inches long, the Sorento’s size places it neatly between larger three-rows like the Telluride or Toyota Highlander, and small ones like the Volkswagen Tiguan and Mitsubishi Outlander. This year, the changes are more modest, but the 2023 Sorento gets more standard active-safety features (blind spot monitoring, safe exit warning and rear cross-traffic alerts) and several of the Sorento’s five trim lines get additional standard equipment, including all-wheel drive (AWD) on the SX-Prestige. New in 2021, last year Kia expanded availability of its off-road X-Line package to more Sorento models and added a PHEV with 32 miles of electric range. That SUV proved so popular that there have often been waiting lists to get one, but the Sorento offers a variety of things that the Telluride doesn’t and has lots of virtues of its own, including hybrid and PHEV powertrains and a lower price tag. You might not have noticed, because the sleek Sorento has been largely overshadowed by the blockbuster success of Kia’s own larger Telluride.
